Grok not replying on X? Causes and fixes you can try

サムネイル

X includes the AI "Grok" developed by its parent company xAI, and by mentioning @grok in a post you can interact with Grok via text, or use Grok to generate or edit images.

In this article, we explain the causes and fixes for when you don't get a response even if you mention Grok.

First, try waiting a bit

If you don't get a reply from Grok, first try waiting a little.

When you mention Grok, you usually get a reply within a few minutes, but in rare cases it can take longer than that.

If you aren't getting a reply, try waiting about an hour first.

The thread is too long

If you mention Grok and then keep exchanging messages with Grok repeatedly so that the thread gets longer, you may stop receiving Grok's replies partway through.

In that case, the cause is that the thread is too long, so end the back-and-forth in replies once and try mentioning Grok again in a new post.

You have Grok muted or blocked

If you have blocked Grok, you won't receive replies even if you mention it.

To mention Grok and interact with it, you need to unblock it.

Also, if you have Grok muted, replies will arrive but you won't receive notifications.

Either unmute Grok, or open the post where you mentioned Grok and check the reply yourself.

Server load has temporarily increased

If requests to Grok are concentrated and server load has increased, you may not receive a reply from Grok.

In that case, mentioning it again after some time has passed may result in a reply.

Replies are restricted

If replies are restricted on the post where you mentioned Grok, Grok may not be able to reply.

When you mention Grok, a reply comes from Grok's account, but because this Grok account is subject to the same rules as a normal X account, it cannot reply to a post where replies are restricted.

As of the time of writing, there are the following 4 types of reply restrictions, and if you set it to [Accounts you follow] while not following Grok, you won't receive a reply.

  • Everyone: Do not restrict replies
  • Accounts you follow: Only accounts you follow can reply
  • Verified accounts: Only accounts with a verified badge (a blue badge or a gold badge) can reply
  • Only accounts you mentioned: Only the accounts mentioned in the post can reply

If you want only Grok to be able to reply to the post, set it to [Only accounts you mentioned] and mention only Grok.

Note that Grok is a verified account with a gold badge, but if you set the reply restriction to [Verified accounts], not only Grok but also general users with a blue badge can reply.

You are mentioning from a private account

When you mention Grok, you receive a reply from Grok's account, but this Grok account is just a normal X account.

Therefore, even if you mention Grok from a private account (so-called "protected account"), you won't receive a reply.

To view a private account's posts or reply to a private account's posts, the viewer needs to be following the account, but Grok's X account does not follow general users' accounts.

For that reason, you cannot mention Grok and interact with it from a private account.

If you want to interact with Grok, instead of mentioning it, use it from the dedicated Grok page built into X, or mention it from a public account.

You are trying to generate or edit images with a free account

If you mention Grok and instruct it to generate or edit an image, Grok will generate an image according to that instruction.

The feature to generate or edit images by mentioning Grok was initially available even on free accounts, but currently only users who have subscribed to the paid subscription service "X Premium" can use it.

Conclusion

We introduced the causes and fixes for when you don't receive a reply even if you mention Grok. Use this article as a reference and try interacting with Grok.

I've been using JavaScript more than my native language since birth. I am nowhere and everywhere on the internet.

I build web apps and browser extensions in TypeScript as a web frontend programmer. I released Shadowban Scanner, a tool that detects shadowbans on X, and Restore Link Card, a tool that brings back link cards. Media outlets in Japan and abroad covered both tools. For iGEM 2023, I built the Wiki for Team Japan-United and helped the team win the Grand Prize. On my blog, I cover news about X and social media, test and troubleshoot bugs, and share frontend development insights.
