It has become a topic of discussion that X (Twitter) has revised its Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.

Some rumors are spreading that it is no longer possible to refuse having your posts used to train xAI’s generative AI “Grok”, but this is not true.

The content stating that user posts submitted to X can be used for AI training has existed for some time, and it is possible to opt out (refuse) so that they are not used for AI training.

In this article, I explain how to prevent your posts from being used to train Grok.

Can I refuse (opt out) so my content is not used to train Grok?

Among some users, there is a rumor that you cannot refuse having content you post used to train Grok, but this is not true.

When the Terms of Service were revised last year, I contacted X support, and I received a response stating that opting out is possible.

In this revision of the Terms of Service, the parts related to AI training have not been changed.

This time as well, just in case, I contacted them via the inquiry desk for the Privacy Policy, and I received a response saying, “You have flexibility to control how your interactions, inputs, and results are used for training or fine-tuning foundation models” and “You can also control how your public posts on X are used by Grok.”

I did not receive an answer to my question about whether they plan to remove the opt-out setting in conjunction with the new Terms of Service and Privacy Policy taking effect, but given that the parts related to AI training in the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy have not been changed, I think it is unlikely that opting out will become impossible.

How do I opt out of training?

To prevent your posts from being used to train Grok, opt out by following the steps below.

1. Open X’s [Settings and privacy]

2. Open [Privacy and safety] > [Grok & Third-Party Collaborators]

3. Turn off the following two items

   • Allow your public data as well as your interactions, inputs, and results with Grok and xAI to be used for training and fine-tuning
   • Allow X to personalize your experience with Grok

What if the setting is grayed out and I cannot change it?

In some environments, it seems that the opt-out setting is grayed out and cannot be changed.

According to testing by Fukubun, who shares information about X, setting your account’s date of birth will allow you to change the opt-out setting.

When I looked into it, I found that the UK’s Age appropriate design code stipulates that privacy-protective settings must be the default for users under 18.

If the date of birth is not set, the age cannot be determined, so it may be designed to be fixed in an opt-out state.

This does not prevent all AI training

Note that the setting to opt out so that your content is not used to train Grok applies only to training new models.

Therefore, it has no effect on portions that have already been incorporated into models that have already been trained.

Also, note that it is not necessarily only X that is using X’s data for AI training.

X uses a mechanism called robots.txt to prohibit third parties from collecting content on X, except for some exceptions such as Google.

However, complying with robots.txt is optional, and there is no way for such third parties to read the opt-out setting.

In addition, there is the possibility that ordinary users manually download images from X and use them for AI training, and there is also the possibility that content is reposted from X to another website and ends up being included in some AI training data.

These kinds of risks also exist on social media other than X, so caution is necessary.
