Misuse of Grok image editing on X is surging: Musk warns about illegal content, including cooperation with authorities

On X (Twitter), there has been a string of cases in which third parties use xAI’s AI “Grok,” which is integrated into the platform, to alter other people’s images into sexual or otherwise inappropriate content.
In response, Elon Musk and X’s official account warned that creating illegal content using Grok will lead to the same consequences as uploading illegal content.
A series of harms stemming from abuse of Grok’s image editing feature
X has built in xAI’s AI “Grok,” and by mentioning @grok in a post, users can interact with Grok via text and generate or edit images.
Recently, a button to edit images with Grok has started appearing on top of images posted to X.
Over the past few days, there has been a surge of cases in which third parties, without permission, mention Grok on images uploaded to X and edit them into sexual or inappropriate images.
Musk and X’s official account respond to DogeDesigner’s pen metaphor post
DogeDesigner, known as a UI/UX designer, posted about criticism surrounding the generation of inappropriate images using Grok, "A pen doesn’t decide what gets written. The person holding it does."
In response, Elon Musk replied, "If you use Grok to create illegal content, you end up with the same result as if you uploaded illegal content."
X’s official safety-related account (@Safety) quoted Musk’s post and stated that it is taking measures against content including child sexual abuse material (CSAM), such as removal, permanent account suspension, and, as necessary, cooperation with authorities, in its post.
It further emphasized, similarly to Musk, that "Anyone using or prompting Grok to make illegal content will suffer the same consequences as if they upload illegal content."
The account also provided links to The X Rules help page and the help page about range of enforcement options.
Under X’s new Terms of Service and Privacy Policy taking effect from January 15, it is clarified that users themselves bear responsibility for AI-generated content they create.

On January 1, Elon Musk generated an image of himself in a bikini using Grok and posted it with "Perfect 👌."

I've been using JavaScript more than my native language since birth. I am nowhere and everywhere on the internet.
I build web apps and browser extensions in TypeScript as a web frontend programmer. I released Shadowban Scanner, a tool that detects shadowbans on X, and Restore Link Card, a tool that brings back link cards. Media outlets in Japan and abroad covered both tools. For iGEM 2023, I built the Wiki for Team Japan-United and helped the team win the Grand Prize. On my blog, I cover news about X and social media, test and troubleshoot bugs, and share frontend development insights.
