X search stops showing older posts: why past posts are missing and which posts are affected

X has developed a search issue where results include recent posts from the past six days but omit some older posts.

Posts that have been up for seven days or more and have zero likes no longer appear in search results.

X search is omitting some posts from results

In the past, X showed posts from more than a week ago in search results regardless of their like, repost, or reply counts.

At the moment, X omits posts that are at least seven days old and have zero likes. In my testing, X showed posts with zero reposts or zero replies regardless of age, while it showed posts with zero likes from a six-day window.

X lets you use from:<screen_name> to limit results to posts from a specific account. You can use min_retweets:<number of reposts>, min_favorites:<number of likes>, and min_replies:<number of replies> to set the minimum number of reposts, likes, or replies for posts in the results. You can add a minus sign before a search term or filter to exclude posts that match that condition.

I used these features to search X under the following three conditions:

• from:keita_roboin -min_retweets:1
• from:keita_roboin -min_favorites:1
• from:keita_roboin -min_replies:1

X returned posts with zero reposts or zero replies that were more than seven days old, but it returned posts with zero likes from a six-day window. These results show that X now excludes posts from search results once they reach seven days of age if they have zero likes.

What can you use instead?

You can use Google Search to find posts that have zero likes and are more than a week old. To limit results to X posts, include site:x.com in your search query. To limit results to posts from a specific account, include site:x.com/<screen_name_without_@>.

Google Search comes with several limitations.

Google tends to include public accounts with a certain number of followers in its search index. If an account has few followers or has existed for a short period, Google may not have indexed it, so its posts may not appear in search results. Private accounts do not appear in Google Search.

Some X search operators have Google Search equivalents, while others do not. For example, X uses since: to limit results to posts after a specified date and time and until: to limit them to posts before a specified date and time. You can replace those operators with Google Search's after: and before: operators. Google Search has no equivalents for X-specific operators such as min_retweets:, min_favorites:, and min_replies:.

X does not guarantee search results for posts older than seven days

Until this change, X search included posts with zero likes after they had passed the seven-day mark, so the new behavior makes search much less useful than before. I use X as a record of day-to-day events and search my own posts when I want to look back at something that happened. With this behavior, I can no longer use X search for that purpose in the same way.

A bug may have caused this issue, but X may have changed its search behavior by design. X's Help Center includes the following statement:

posts more than a week old may fail to display in timelines or search because of indexing capacity restrictions. Old posts are never lost, but cannot always be displayed.

I checked an archive in the Wayback Machine and found that the Help Center contained this statement by September 2023, when X still operated under the Twitter name.

In other words, X search used to show posts older than a week, but X never guaranteed that it would keep them in search results. The loss of access is frustrating, but X had never guaranteed that older posts would remain searchable, so users may have no way around the limitation.
