How to deal with a bug where messages disappear after you allow DM requests in XChat

Some users have reported a bug in X where messages sent before you allowed a message request in XChat (formerly DMs) disappear after you allow the request.
In this article, I cover the details of this bug and how to deal with it.

A bug occurs where messages disappear after you allow a message request
When someone you have not exchanged messages with on X sends you a message in XChat (formerly DMs), you see it as a message request.
In normal use, once you allow a message request, you can continue the conversation with that person. In some environments, however, users have reported a bug where the messages from that person disappear and no longer appear right after they allow the message request.
I have not been able to reproduce the issue in my environment, but several users have posted reports about it on X.
Check messages that disappeared on Web from your mobile app
For the bug where messages disappear after you allow a message request, several users have reported that they could see messages that disappeared on the web by opening them in the mobile app.
Open the X app on your mobile device
Open XChat from the navigation bar at the bottom of the screen
Check whether messages from the account whose message request you allowed appear
Ask the other person to resend the message if you cannot see it on your mobile app
If you check the mobile app and still cannot see the message, you need to ask the other person to resend it.
If you know the other person's account, send them a message saying that their message disappeared after you allowed the message request and asking them to resend it.
Until X fixes this bug, I recommend taking a screenshot or otherwise recording the message body before you allow an incoming message request.
This takes extra effort, but saving a screenshot or another record lets you keep the message.
Conclusion
If messages from someone disappear after you allow their message request on X, check the messages in the mobile app.
Several posts say that messages that no longer appeared on the web version of X appeared in the mobile app.
If you still cannot find the messages in the smartphone app, ask the other person to resend them.

I've been using JavaScript more than my native language since birth. I am nowhere and everywhere on the internet.
I build web apps and browser extensions in TypeScript as a web frontend programmer. I released Shadowban Scanner, a tool that detects shadowbans on X, and Restore Link Card, a tool that brings back link cards. Media outlets in Japan and abroad covered both tools. For iGEM 2023, I built the Wiki for Team Japan-United and helped the team win the Grand Prize. On my blog, I cover news about X and social media, test and troubleshoot bugs, and share frontend development insights.
