Why X DMs show someone as “Member,” how to fix it, and how to check who you were chatting with

Users have reported a bug in the iOS X app that shows the other person’s name as “Member” when they open XChat, formerly known as X DMs.
When you can open the other person’s profile, you can check who you were chatting with by looking at their profile name or user ID.

The “Member” display issue in X DMs (XChat)
Several users have reported a bug where a specific user appears as “Member” in XChat with a gray icon.
In the iOS version of the X app, users have seen the following issues in XChat:
- The other person’s display name appears as “Member” in the chat list or conversation screen
- The other person’s icon turns gray
- You can still read the messages in the chat
- Tapping the other person’s icon or name may not open their profile
Users outside Japan, including English-speaking users, have reported the same bug, so the issue appears to affect users worldwide.
How to handle a chat partner showing as “Member”
In some cases, tapping the person shown as “Member” opens their profile. In other cases, it does not.
When the profile opens, you can check who you were chatting with from the profile.
Users have also reported cases where tapping the person shown as “Member” does not open the profile.
Since this bug affects the iOS version of the X app, you can use the web version of X instead when the app does not open the profile. The web version lets you check who you were chatting with.

Users have reported a bug in the iOS X app that shows the other person’s name as “Member” when they open XChat, formerly known as X DMs.
When you can open the other person’s profile, you can check who you were chatting with by looking at their profile name or user ID.
When you cannot open the profile, use the web version of X instead of the app to check who you were chatting with.

I've been using JavaScript more than my native language since birth. I am nowhere and everywhere on the internet.
I build web apps and browser extensions in TypeScript as a web frontend programmer. I released Shadowban Scanner, a tool that detects shadowbans on X, and Restore Link Card, a tool that brings back link cards. Media outlets in Japan and abroad covered both tools. For iGEM 2023, I built the Wiki for Team Japan-United and helped the team win the Grand Prize. On my blog, I cover news about X and social media, test and troubleshoot bugs, and share frontend development insights.
