GigaFile outage blocks access, partial service restored on temporary domain

Since around 9:00 a.m. on July 6, 2026 (JST), users have been unable to access GigaFile, a well-known online file-sharing service in Japan.
GigaFile’s official X account announced that it has temporarily changed its domain from “gigafile.nu” to “gigafile.jp” to restore service sooner.

Users unable to open or use GigaFile due to outage
Since around 9:00 a.m. on July 6, 2026 (JST), users have been unable to access GigaFile.
GigaFile caused this outage, so the issue has nothing to do with browser bugs, network outages, or similar problems.
When users try to access the GigaFile website, browsers display errors such as [Address not found], [This site can’t be reached], and [Server not found].
The access issue continued as of 8:00 p.m., and the outage has lasted for an extended period.
According to GigaFile’s official X account, the company is keeping the service available on a temporary domain while it responds to the outage.

For file-sharing URLs that have already been issued, users can access them by changing the domain portion to gigafile.jp.
At the time of writing, GigaFile says it has restricted some features on the temporary domain, so users may not be able to use every feature.
GigaFile’s official X account has asked users of its member services to log in again because the temporary domain change logged everyone out.

My analysis
I conducted an independent investigation and found that this outage most likely relates to DNS rather than a failure in GigaFile’s servers or network.
In a typical DNS misconfiguration, the domain itself still resolves, but users cannot reach the server behind it.
At the moment, however, GigaFile’s domain gigafile.nu and its subdomains return NXDOMAIN (Non-Existent Domain), and the delegation has disappeared from the authoritative DNS zone that manages .nu.
According to historical WHOIS information available through Cloudflare Radar, gigafile.nu was created on August 28, 2010, and expires on August 28, 2026, so the domain does not appear to have expired.
Taken together, this information suggests that one of the following issues likely caused the outage.
- A suspension or delegation suspension by the registrar eNom or the
.nuregistry - A serverHold/clientHold-equivalent status caused by domain registration information, payment, identity verification, policy, abuse handling, or a related issue
- A registry-side incident involving zone generation or registration data propagation
GigaFile likely moved to a temporary domain because control of gigafile.nu has fallen outside the operator’s normal DNS management scope.
An early recovery may prove difficult, and users will likely need to use the temporary domain for some time.
