X’s web app will get faster. Head of product says load times will drop by 90%

X plans to make a major reduction to load times on its web app.

Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, said X has rewritten almost every core part of the app over the past 12 months and will soon ship a version that reduces web app load times by 90%.

According to Bier, X has worked on a large-scale rewrite of the app’s internals as an improvement that users do not see on the surface.

X developer Yagiz Nizipli posted a video comparing load times between the new version and the current version under a slow 4G internet connection.

The video shows that the current version takes around 18 seconds to load a profile page, while the new version finishes loading the profile page in around 5 seconds.

That falls short of Bier’s 90% figure, but it still means load times drop by around 70%.

Nizipli’s video shows the domain lite.x.com, but when I visited that domain, I got a 404 error. Since the domain itself exists, X may restrict access to users inside the company.

Since Nizipli described the changes in his post as “improvements to upcoming versions,” the load-time reduction does not appear to have rolled out to the public yet. I could not confirm a specific release date for the faster version.

I do not usually notice load times when I browse X on a PC, but I often find X slow to load when I use Firefox on my smartphone while I am out. A reduction in load times would make this a welcome update.

As a side note, if X feels slow after loading in Firefox, you can install the Lightweight X extension to disable UI blur effects and make it lighter.
