X adds region-based reply restrictions as reply controls become more granular

X (Twitter) has implemented a new feature that allows replies to posts to be restricted only to users in specific regions.

When I checked, it was not yet available on the X web client or the X Android app.

Although the Android version of X Lite displayed a setting to restrict replies to users in specific regions, trying to post with that setting applied resulted in an [Unable to send post] error and the post could not be published.

X already has a feature that allows people posting on X to limit which accounts can reply to their own posts, and X has expanded the existing option that allows only accounts you follow to reply by adding a setting that also permits followers of the accounts you follow to reply.

Among the settings that restrict which users can reply to posts on X, the company has expanded the existing option that allows replies only from accounts you follow, adding a setting that also allows replies from accounts followed by the accounts you follow.

After X head of product Nikita Bier announced a feature that allows the reply range to be restricted to followers of accounts you follow, a feature that allows only users in specific regions to reply was spotted in some environments.

When I checked, the setting to restrict regions did not appear in the X web client or the Android X app, while it did appear in the Android X Lite app.

However, when I actually tried to apply the setting and send a post, an [Unable to send post] error appeared and I was unable to publish it.

At the time of writing, one or more of the following regions can be selected via checkboxes as eligible reply regions.

• North America
• South America
• Europe
• East Asia
• Australasia (as written in the original. A typo for Australia?)
• Africa
• Southeast Asia
• South Asia
• Central Asia
• West Asia

The screen for selecting reply regions displays the message [Keep in mind that anyone mentioned can always reply], suggesting that mentioned accounts can always reply regardless of regional restrictions.

It is unclear how the system determines a user's region, but it may be estimating it in a similar way to the location shown on profiles.

X to display username change history and base country, testing starts next week

An experiment to display additional information on X profiles, such as the account’s base country, connection source, and username change history, will begin next week.

X also appears to be increasingly emphasizing regionally rooted conversations rather than just global conversations, and on March 25 it announced a revision to creator revenue sharing that would prioritize creators in the same country and language sphere, only to withdraw it after backlash from creators.

On March 25, X (Twitter) Head of Product Nikita Bier announced that the mechanism for Creator Revenue Sharing would be revised starting Thursday local time. However, immediately after this new policy was announced, it drew backlash from creators, and Elon Musk stated that "We will pause moving forward with this until further consideration."
