X tests a new setting adding "Account you follow and who they follow" to the reply audience, with early access for Premium+

X (Twitter) Head of Product Nikita Bier revealed that the company has started a new test related to the feature that restricts which users can reply to posts.
Among the settings that restrict which users can reply to posts on X, the company has expanded the existing option that allows replies only from accounts you follow, adding a setting that also allows replies from accounts followed by the accounts you follow.

According to Bier, this feature is available as early access on the top-tier Premium+ plan of X's paid subscription service X Premium.
However, when I checked on the X web client with my account, which subscribes to the Premium plan rather than Premium+, I was able to restrict replies to accounts followed by the accounts I follow, so although it is unclear whether this is intentional, it appears to be available on the Premium plan as well.

This test is useful in cases where you want to increase the number of people who can reply compared with before, but do not want to open replies to an unspecified large number of users.
On X, replies from so-called "engagement farming" that are unrelated to the original post or are low quality have become a problem, and as a countermeasure, X is rolling out changes that restrict replies made via the API.

By adding a setting that fills the gap between letting anyone reply and allowing replies only from a very limited set of accounts, post authors will be able to fine-tune more precisely how broadly conversations around their posts can expand.
Bier himself is also promoting the benefits of this new feature, saying that it allows broader participation while still preserving the intimacy of the conversation.
Also, after Bier announced a feature to limit replies to followers of the account that you follow, a setting was rolled out that allows only users in specific regions to reply.

Revision History
- March 27, 2026: Initially, based on a post by Nikita Bier, the article stated that the reply scope would be limited to "followers of accounts you follow." However, it was discovered that the feature actually limits replies to accounts followed by accounts you follow, so the article has been corrected. I apologize for the error.
