GitHub temporarily suspends new free trials for Copilot Pro as it steps up measures against increasing abuse

GitHub has announced that it will temporarily pause accepting new free trials for its paid subscription service, GitHub Copilot Pro.
The company says it will stop offering new free trials for Copilot Pro because abuse of the free trial has been increasing as the number of Copilot users grows.
With this change, existing trial users will not be affected, but new users will be unable to start a free trial for the time being.
In addition, Copilot Free and the paid Copilot Pro subscription will continue to be available as before.
GitHub explains that this measure is not permanent, but a temporary response.
The company says it plans to resume accepting new trial sign-ups after strengthening its protective mechanisms to prevent abuse of the trial program, and that it will provide another update on the timing of the resumption at a later date.
GitHub has recently been making moves that appear intended to reduce the cost of GitHub Copilot.
In mid-March, it stopped allowing GPT-5.4 and Claude to be selected under the GitHub Copilot student discount, and it has also indicated a policy of discontinuing the Claude Opus 4.6 Fast option in Copilot Pro+ and imposing rate limits on some models.

GitHub Copilot was known for its strong cost performance because it applies limits based on the number of sessions rather than the number of tokens, and because it allows the use of models from a variety of providers.

I've been using JavaScript more than my native language since birth. I am nowhere and everywhere on the internet.
I build web apps and browser extensions in TypeScript as a web frontend programmer. I released Shadowban Scanner, a tool that detects shadowbans on X, and Restore Link Card, a tool that brings back link cards. Media outlets in Japan and abroad covered both tools. For iGEM 2023, I built the Wiki for Team Japan-United and helped the team win the Grand Prize. On my blog, I cover news about X and social media, test and troubleshoot bugs, and share frontend development insights.
