Have you ever created a poll on X (Twitter) and then, after a while, found that the order of the choices had been rearranged and the voting order had become scrambled?

In X's recent poll feature, it has become more convenient because you can now attach images to choices, but at the same time, a problem has also occurred where the order of the choices changes on its own.

This article explains the cause of the problem where the order of choices in X polls gets rearranged on its own and how to deal with it.

Why the order of choices changes

The reason the order of choices in a poll changes on its own is a specification change on X.

Since around March 2026, once a poll gathers a certain number of votes, its choices have started to be automatically reordered by vote count.

Until now, X polls basically displayed choices in the same order in which they were arranged when the poll was created.

Because of this, if you assume that the original order from when the poll was created will be preserved, as before, and number the choices like "1. Option A", "2. Option B", and "3. Option C", it becomes unnatural once a certain number of votes has been gathered and the choices are reordered by vote count.

Also, if you list the choices not only in the poll itself but also in the body of the post, the order of the choices in the post body may no longer match the actual order of the choices in the poll.

In this way, when the poll is not merely being used to check how many votes each choice gets, but the arrangement of the choices itself is intended to carry meaning, it becomes harder for viewers to intuitively understand the positions of the choices in the poll.

Now that poll choices are displayed in order of vote count, there have even been posts from people saying they mistakenly thought they had arranged the choices incorrectly and recreated the poll.

However, when the order of choices gets rearranged on its own after a poll is created, the cause is not a mistake by the author, but a specification change that makes the choices appear in order of vote count.

Furthermore, on X, there is a glitch where the number of votes displayed is lower than the actual number of votes cast, causing some votes not to be reflected.

How to deal with the order of choices being rearranged

Because choices are displayed in order of vote count due to a specification change on X, there is no way to prevent the order itself from being rearranged.

An easy countermeasure I recommend is to word the choices in a way that will not cause problems even if their order changes.

For example, instead of using position-dependent labels such as "1. Option A", "2. Option B", and "3. Option C", it is better to simply use "Option A", "Option B", and "Option C" so that it will not be a problem even if the order changes.

Also, although it takes more effort, I also recommend using an external survey service.

Having the order of choices change to follow vote count not only confuses users, but also affects the accuracy of the poll.

In particular, it is generally known that in web surveys there is a bias whereby the choice shown first is more likely to be selected, so if the choices are rearranged in order of vote count, there is a possibility that the choices with more votes will become even more likely to be selected.

If you care about the accuracy of your poll, you should use an external survey service instead of using X's built-in poll.

For example, Google Forms allows you to fix the order of choices or display them in a random order, and it is convenient because it can be used not only for simple voting but also for collecting data such as free-text responses and analyzing the results in detail.

However, because creating a poll and voting in it requires less effort with X's built-in polls, you should be aware that if you use an external service such as Google Forms, it is highly likely that your poll will attract fewer votes than a poll within X.

Conclusion

In X's recent poll feature, it has become more convenient because you can now attach images to choices, but at the same time, the order of the choices may change on its own.

This is caused by a specification change under which, once a poll gathers a certain number of votes, the choices are reordered by vote count.

Since there is no way to prevent the order of choices from being rearranged, I recommend either creating a poll that will not cause problems even if the order changes, or using an external service.

I've been using JavaScript more than my native language since birth. I am nowhere and everywhere on the internet.

I build web apps and browser extensions in TypeScript as a web frontend programmer. I released Shadowban Scanner, a tool that detects shadowbans on X, and Restore Link Card, a tool that brings back link cards. Media outlets in Japan and abroad covered both tools.
