Can’t host an X Space on Android? Why the option disappeared and how to work around it

A problem in the X app for Android prevents users from hosting a Space, although they can still listen to Spaces hosted by other users.

X has not yet added Space hosting to the new Android app it is rolling out. The company expects to add the feature within 7 to 10 days.

Until X adds Space hosting to the new Android app, you will need to host Spaces through the iOS app or the web version of X.

Why you can no longer host Spaces on Android

The X app for Android previously let you host a Space from the menu that appeared when you tapped the plus icon in the lower-right corner of the screen.

A recent X update changed the interface. Tapping the plus icon now opens the post composer, which leaves Android users without a way to create a Space in the app.

Some online articles claim that a bug removed access to the button for creating a Space. That claim is incorrect.

X is rolling out a rebuilt Android app, and the company has not yet added Space hosting to it. A missing feature in the new app, rather than a bug, prevents users from hosting Spaces.

What can you do when you cannot host a Space?

Because X has not added Space hosting to its new Android app, you need to wait for the feature or host your Space elsewhere.

Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, said that X has made Space hosting in the new Android app a priority and expects the work to take 7 to 10 days. He recommends using the web version of X until then.

You can create a Space from the web on a PC or smartphone by following the steps below.

On a PC

Open the web version of X on your PC and follow these steps:

1. Open the web version of X

2. Select [Create a Space] from the sidebar

3. Configure the required settings and start the Space

On a smartphone

Unlike the desktop website, the mobile website does not show a button for creating a Space in its menu. Follow these steps instead:

1. Open the following URL in your browser, not in the X app

   https://x.com/i/spaces/start

2. When the menu for creating a Space appears, configure the settings and start the Space

My analysis

Some online articles claim that X broke Space hosting by accident when it enhanced the Spaces experience in the Android app. The available evidence does not support that claim.

X now offers three Android apps: the legacy app, New X Android, and X Lite.

X rebuilt both New X Android and X Lite from scratch. Users can switch from the legacy app to New X Android through a button in the sidebar, while X distributes X Lite as a separate app. X Lite tends to offer greater stability and receives new features sooner.

I have used X Lite since X began distributing it more than a year ago. Only the legacy app has ever supported Space hosting. X has never added the feature to New X Android or X Lite. The missing hosting option comes from an unfinished feature set in the rebuilt apps, not a bug.

X plans to roll out the new Android app to all users in July, and some users have begun moving from the legacy app to New X Android. A recent profile redesign drew attention online, and that design also comes from the new Android app.

Users who see the new profile design have already switched to the new Android app and cannot host Spaces. Users who can still host Spaces will likely move to the new app through an update in the coming days.

Early versions of X Lite ran slowly and lacked several features from the previous app. It now runs smoothly and includes most of the features the legacy app offered. X has also added several features that already existed on iOS and the web but never reached the legacy Android app.

Bier said X will be able to add new features to the Android and iOS apps at about the same time after the new Android app reaches general release. Users can expect X to add missing and new features at a faster pace.
