X software engineer Evgenii Matsiuk said X has strengthened Spaces-related features in its Android app, including support for displaying shared posts and emoji reactions.
X strengthens Spaces in the Android app
According to Matsiuk, the Android app update includes the following Spaces improvements:
- Users can now view posts shared by the host
- All users can now use emoji reactions and hand raising, and X has added a new reaction picker
- The participant list now shows verified badges and an accurate viewer count
- Users can replay recorded Spaces with greater stability, and the app now shows the right playback controls
- Speakers can now mute themselves from the mini player with one tap
In X Spaces, hosts can display posts inside a Space and share them with listeners. Until now, users could not use this feature in the Android version of the X app.
With this update, users can view posts shared by hosts in the Android version of the X app.
The update covers post display only. Hosts, co-hosts, and speakers can share posts with listeners by selecting [Share to Space] from the share button on any post in the timeline. Matsiuk said the team still has the in-app host-side post sharing feature under development.
The update also makes emoji reactions and hand raising available to all users on X for Android, and introduces a new reaction picker. This should help users react in a Space without speaking.
In the Space participant list, users can now see an accurate count of listeners watching the Space, and verified accounts now show a blue badge.
Users can now replay recorded Spaces with greater stability, and the app now shows playback controls in the right place.
Speakers in a Space can also mute themselves from the mini player with one tap.
My analysis
With this update, X has strengthened Spaces on Android and made features available that users could use on other platforms but not on Android.
Matsiuk wrote, “More coming 👀,” so users can expect X to add more features to the Android app.
X Head of Product Nikita Bier said the other day that X would roll out the new Android app to all users this month. He also explained that the new app would let X ship new features to Android at the same time as iOS or close to it.

X rolled out this update ahead of that release. After X releases the new Android app, I expect the gap with other platforms to narrow.
