Instagram outage prevents users from logging in, logs them out, and blocks access to posts

Since the evening of June 12, 2026 (JST), Instagram users have reported that the service logs them out of their accounts or displays error screens.
In my testing, the issue affected a public account, while a private account could still view posts without problems.

Instagram logs users out and fails to load posts
Since the evening of June 12, 2026 (JST), Instagram users have encountered the following problems:
- Instagram logs users out of their accounts
- Users cannot log in even with the correct credentials
- Instagram displays errors such as “Unable to log in”
- Feeds and profiles fail to load
- Users cannot switch accounts
In my environment, I could view posts from a private account without problems. Instagram had logged me out of a public account, however, and would not let me log back in.

I also saw the following messages when I opened posts from public accounts without logging in to Instagram. The message varied by environment, and reloading the same post sometimes made it accessible, which suggests that the service remains unstable.

Meta acknowledges the outage and begins recovery work
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone wrote on his X account that the company knows some users cannot access several of its services and has begun working to restore them.
The outage affects Instagram as well as other Meta services, including Facebook and Messenger.
At the time of writing, Meta had not disclosed the cause of the outage or provided an estimated recovery time.
What this means
Because the outage affects several Meta services rather than Instagram alone, Meta’s servers likely have a problem rather than the Instagram app itself.
Instagram sometimes displays posts to logged-out users and sometimes returns an error, which suggests that its servers cannot process requests consistently.
I could view posts from a private account without problems, while Instagram logged me out of a public account. The reason for this difference remains unclear, but Meta has acknowledged the issue and will likely restore service after completing its recovery work.

I've been using JavaScript more than my native language since birth. I am nowhere and everywhere on the internet.
I build web apps and browser extensions in TypeScript as a web frontend programmer. I released Shadowban Scanner, a tool that detects shadowbans on X, and Restore Link Card, a tool that brings back link cards. Media outlets in Japan and abroad covered both tools.
