When you try to change your account name (display name) on X (Twitter), you may see an error message saying "Error: The operation could not be completed. (com.twitter.HTTPRequestActionResponseError error 131)", and you may be unable to change your account name.

In this article, I explain the causes and fixes when you can't change your account name due to error 131.

Causes and fixes for error 131

According to X developer documentation, error 131 is described as an unknown internal error.

Because "unknown internal error" is an abstract error description, the specific cause varies by case, but in general the following causes are possible.

Your account name exceeds 50 characters

There is a rule that X account names can be up to 50 characters long.

In most cases, if you enter an account name that exceeds 50 characters, characters from the 51st onward are automatically deleted, but if for some reason you try to set an account name with 51 characters or more, it may result in an error.

If the account name you're trying to set is long, check whether it fits within 50 characters.

You have exceeded the limit on how often you can change your account name

X does not officially state a limit on the number of times you can change your account name, but it is generally said that you can only change it up to twice within 24 hours.

Basically, you don't change your X account name frequently, so if you just changed your account name recently, wait 24 hours and then try changing it again.

You are trying to change your account name immediately after changing your password

Although this is not official information, there is information stating that after changing your X password, it takes 48 hours before you can change your account name.

If you have just changed your account password recently, wait at least 48 hours before trying to change your account name again.

You are subscribed to X Premium and are trying to change your account name again right after changing it

If you are subscribed to the "Premium" plan or higher of X's paid subscription service "X Premium", you will be granted a verification badge (blue badge).

If an account eligible for a verification badge changes its icon, account name, or username, the verification badge will be temporarily hidden until X completes its review.

Until the review is finished, you cannot change your icon, account name, or username.

In other words, for accounts subscribed to the Premium plan or higher of X Premium, after changing the account name, you cannot change the account name again until the verification badge is displayed again.

If you are on the Premium plan or higher and have recently changed your account name, wait until the verification badge is displayed again before changing your account name.

A temporary server outage is occurring

According to the developer documentation mentioned earlier, it says that error 131 corresponds to status code 500.

Status code 500 indicates a general server error, and it may be used when a temporary outage is occurring.

If you can't think of any reason why you can't change your account name, it's possible that X is experiencing a temporary outage.

If you can't change your account name due to an outage, trying again after waiting for a while may allow you to change it.

Conclusion

I explained the causes and fixes when you can't change your X account name due to the error "Error: The operation could not be completed. (com.twitter.HTTPRequestActionResponseError error 131)".

Error 131 means an unknown internal error, and it is displayed when you don't meet the conditions for changing your account name or when an outage is occurring.
