X search malfunction: exact match search not working - causes and solutions?

Webブラウザーを抽象的に表現した3D CG

As of March 1, 2026, reports are increasing of issues with search on X (Twitter), such as intended search results not being shown, exact match search using double quotation marks being unavailable, and unrelated posts being mixed into the [Latest] tab.

In particular, mentions related to this have been increasing since around the evening of February 28.

A bug where search is weird / exact match search cannot be performed

As of the time of writing, reports are coming in one after another mainly about the following issues.

  • In the search results’ [Latest] tab, posts unrelated to the search terms are displayed, especially overseas posts such as in Arabic, or posts that look like spam
  • Posts that should be displayed in search results are not displayed
  • Search results include posts with weak relevance, such as posts that someone reposted
  • Exact match search using double quotation marks ("") does not work or is unstable
  • The search targets end up including account names

X previously announced a feature to exclude usernames (strictly speaking, account names) from search targets, but as I confirmed, this feature has also become unusable, and usernames are now included in search targets.

In my environment, it was found that these issues are occurring on all of the X Android app, the X Lite app, and the X web client.

Therefore, it is believed that the cause is not an app bug but a bug in X’s server-side search processing.

The X API status reads "All systems are operational.", and no outage has been announced.

Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, says that the search feature is being migrated to a new system, and posted that the new [Top] tab and [Latest] tab have been rolled out to 100% and that backfilling of data for the past 7 days has been completed.

From this, it is possible that X is currently migrating the search feature to a new system, and that issues are occurring in the process.

In addition to these issues, there is also an issue with the Android app where the scroll position of search results automatically returns to the top.

What are the workarounds?

Because these issues are caused by server-side processing on X, as of the time of writing there are no workarounds users can do on their side.

If you absolutely need to search for the latest posts, one method is to temporarily use Yahoo! Realtime Search, Google Search, or similar services.

Please note that exact match search can be restored by using the method introduced in this article.

I've been using JavaScript more than my native language since birth. I am nowhere and everywhere on the internet.

I build web apps and browser extensions in TypeScript as a web frontend programmer. I released Shadowban Scanner, a tool that detects shadowbans on X, and Restore Link Card, a tool that brings back link cards. Media outlets in Japan and abroad covered both tools. For iGEM 2023, I built the Wiki for Team Japan-United and helped the team win the Grand Prize. On my blog, I cover news about X and social media, test and troubleshoot bugs, and share frontend development insights.
